Parents
Parents are invited to join us and become partners in their child’s education. Research shows that when parents demonstrate an interest in their student’s learning, provide assistance and encouragement, and set up specific study times with clear expectations, student learning is enhanced. If you have a question or concern, please talk with your student's teacher or contact the school office.
Student Parent Handbook
The district handbook is intended as a method of communicating to students and families regarding general school district information, rules, and procedures.
The Franklin K-8 School Parent/Student Information Guide contains information specific to Franklin, such as our guiding beliefs, school arrival and dismissal, and curriculum nights.
Regular attendance at school is essential for academic progress and is a state law. We ask that parents and guardians encourage good attendance and help their student(s) arrive by 8:00 am each day.
Absences
Repeated absences and tardies are reported to the LBL ESD attendance officer. Any student absence longer than 10 school days requires that the school withdraw that student from school, and the information is reported to the state.
Excusing an Absence
Parents/guardians are asked leave a voicemail on Franklin attendance line (541-757-5824) or email Franklin attendance (franklin.attendance@corvallis.k12.or.us) by 9:00 am each day their student is absent or tardy. You can leave a voicemail or send an email at any time. If the school has not received a message regarding an absence, the student will be reported as an unexcused absence and home will be called to verify.
- When excusing your student’s absence, please include:
- your name and relationship to the student
- student’s name & grade
- date and time of the absence
- reason for the absence
- phone number where you can be reached
Students arriving after 8:00 am must check in at the office and get a pass to class. A parent/guardian may call the school in advance or accompany the child into the office to give the reason for an excused or unexcused tardy. Parents/guardians may also pre-order lunch by phone if their child will be late.
Changing After-School Plans & Planning Absences
If there is a change from your student’s regular after school routine, a note must accompany your student to school or a phone call must be received by the office by 2:00 pm (1:00 pm on Fridays). We will NOT allow children to change their after school plans without written or verbal permission from the parent/guardian.
If someone other than a parent/guardian or designated emergency contact person is picking up a child, the school requires permission from the parent or legal guardian.
We encourage you to stay up to date with our school news. Information and reminders are sent to parents/guardians via ParentSquare. If you are not receiving emails from us, contact the main office. Resource links for emergency, safety, and inclement weather notifications can be found below.

Important Information about Volunteering at Franklin
- For security reasons, the school district requires all adults in the school to wear badges identifying them. All volunteers need to complete a volunteer application (with background check) every two years.
- When you do volunteer work for Franklin, whether at the school or not, please check-in at the HelpCounter*, our volunteer tracking website.
Student success and growth is strongly linked to student health. We encourage healthy behaviors and provide health support services to students. If you have concerns about your student’s health and well-being, please contact the main office to learn about local resources.
We are committed to maintaining a healthy school environment. Students should be up to date on immunizations and we ask that students stay home if they are ill. Parents/guardians are required to complete the required forms for any medication that a student takes at school.
Corvallis School District Food & Nutrition Services is committed to providing healthy meals for all students. Our district meal program provides breakfast and lunch each school day. All students qualify for a free complete “reimbursable” breakfast and lunch, regardless of income. Families do not need to fill out free and reduced lunch applications for these benefits.
School Menus
Corvallis menus are created on a four-week rotation that remains fairly consistent for the entire school year. All Corvallis schools offer full salad bars to their students in an effort to encourage them to eat more fruits and vegetables, and also as a vegetarian lunch option.

Lunch and Lunchtime Activities
Please make sure your child has dressed appropriately for the weather as they will be outside every day during part of their lunch. In the event of heavy rain or severe cold, we will have Indoor Rec at lunch. When Indoor Rec is called, the blacktop will be closed and students will be in the gym for the recreation portion of their lunch.
For lunch, students can choose to bring a lunch or purchase a nutritious, well-balanced lunch from the cafeteria.
It is the responsibility of the entire school community to foster a safe environment which promotes positive relationships that value intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development for everyone. Our staff are trained and prepared to educate students to be responsible for school safety.

In the event of an emergency, staff are trained to follow a standard response protocol for a variety of situations. All schools are required to perform safety drills each month. Please make sure that your student’s emergency contact information is updated each year.

Reporting a Safety Concern
Our goal is to maintain a safe environment that fosters student learning. Policies are in place to help us respond to and correct disruptive or dangerous behaviors. If you have concerns about your student, please contact the main office.
Report a Bias Incident
A bias incident is a person’s hostile expression toward another person, relating to the other person’s perceived race, color, religion, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin. Bias incidents may include derogatory language or behavior. Reporting bias and symbols of hate allows school staff to formally address Bias Incidents and provides important information about bias and hate so that we can improve the culture of our district and school communities. The Franklin School PTA is an active group of parents, grandparents, and teachers who work together to build community at Franklin School. Our mission is in line with that of the Oregon PTA: The overall purpose of PTA is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
The Franklin School PTA is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that provides financial and volunteer support to our students, teachers, staff, and administration. We provide monetary assistance for programs and curriculum, and we coordinate events throughout the year to build community and make Franklin School engaging and welcoming to all students and families. We welcome volunteers from families and the community and welcome help at any time throughout the year. You do not need to be a PTA member to volunteer at Franklin School, and anyone is welcome to attend our meetings regardless of membership. Your $10 PTA membership dues contribute to advocacy at the local, state and national level.
Becoming a Member
To become a Franklin School PTA member, visit the Oregon PTA membership website, select “Franklin PTA (Corvallis)” as the Local Unit, and enter your contact information and payment information. If you would prefer to pay the Franklin School PTA membership fee by personal check, please complete the Franklin School PTA membership form and mail the form and a check for $10/member or $20/family to Franklin School. We will then submit your membership form and payment to Oregon PTA for processing.
Meetings
The Franklin School PTA holds hybrid meetings beginning at 6:00 pm the second Tuesday of the month. We meet in the Franklin School Science Room and also offer a remote call-in option via Zoom. A meeting agenda and supporting materials are distributed in advance of the meeting for preview and comment. Zoom log-in information is always included at the top of the meeting agenda. Typical meetings include the Principal’s Report, guest presenters, a financial update, and reports from PTA committees. Meetings typically last between an hour and an hour and a half. Interested participants are welcome to attend for as long as they would like. Attend a PTA meeting and find out what’s happening at Franklin School!

Fundraisers
We minimize direct fundraisers and try to make all fundraising opportunities fun! In addition to the opportunities below, we also appreciate direct donations which are tax deductible as the PTA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The Franklin PTA Jog-a-thon is our largest and most important fundraiser of the year. We hold our Jog-a-thon in the spring to take advantage of warmer weather and student enthusiasm as the end of the school year nears.
The Franklin PTA plans monthly Dine Outs that help support local restaurants, encourage community building among Franklin families, and raise funds for the PTA. Look for monthly announcements about upcoming Dine Outs at your favorite Corvallis restaurants!
We also encourage families to enroll in the Fred Meyer Community Rewards program. Fred Meyer (Kroger) donates a portion of each Rewards program member’s purchases to the Franklin PTA. Please consider signing up for the program and contributing to the PTA. Set up for a Fred Meyer account and then enroll in the Community Awards Program (Organization # VK050).
